I am not quite sure what I am going to do because I am all for commercials and tv, but I want to call The Clash out on something.....
I am frustrated and sad and feel like a little bit of my past has been sold out from under me. Now don't get me wrong, I am all about consumerism. I buy stuff. Give me 20 minutes in Target or an hour in Borders and seriously... I can drop me some hard earned bread on stuff that I will use and love and adore. But selling out I don't think its in my d.n.a. It does help that I don't really own anything more than my thoughts that I blurb out here so selling anything out of my own is an exercise in futility. BUT... what kills me and really bums me out beyond all belief...is this commercial.
I understand the rights of those that own the song, but I really can't see Joe Strummer if he was alive (allavay) condoning this. I mean seriously... the use of Pressure Drop selling an SUV? This just makes me cry inside more than just a little bit. Mick Jones this is calling you out. It makes me remember the Doc's ad campaign? Sure they ended up pulling the campaign, but because people thought it was in bad taste that they used Kurt Cobain's image (didn't he wear Chucks anyway?) and some people kvetched about Joe Strummer shilling for Doc Martin (I do love the ads nonetheless...the Sid one is a favorite), but that goes without saying... it is wrong.
And hearing Pressure Drop for like 30 seconds every commercial break just makes me sad. Sure they make some money each time that commerial runs and that is good (see I am all about the big big buck) but honestly doesn't a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band deserve better than shilling for a gas guzzling SUV? I miss the Clash and what they stood for.
It makes me remember a conversation I had once about what my favorite Clash song was. Don't get me wrong, Pressure Drop was not it. It was and still would be Lost in the Supermarket and then next is Train in Vain. The second Lucinda Tate and Mick Jones sell out those songs I am in full on revolt. So how about you both make this the last time this gal has to make this kind of statement.
Now if Mick Jones would spend some of that money he is making on studio time I really would be thrilled (I take it back... he has been in the studio and is releasing a cd this Tuesday... need to make a stop at Twist and Shout apparantly, sorry Mick... ). Topper Headon I am looking at you too.
