First let me say, I lament the loss this literary world suffered when the shut the printing presses down at Spy Magazine. Seriously in my parents basement I bet there are at least 4 years of magazines in a box just atrophying. I used that magazine more than once for more than one speech or paper or debate in college. The most memorable would be on how a twinkie is made, the legends with its shelf life and clear cut instructions on how to duplicate its manufacture even down to where to purchase suet. (and no I haven't eaten a Twinkie (tm) since). I loved using Spy Magazine as a source. I am quite sure my professors weren't as impressed. Hey I was a film student, irreverency is important.
So when the magazine got nasty and bitter and just plain mean and far far less whitty at its end I was still sad to see it fold. That and the good version of Details.
I have been encouraged that the world may just almost be a better place now that Radar Magazine is on the newsstands. I heart it. Its so close to what I remember Spy Magazine to be. I miss the Seperated at Birth column (seriously they actually found pictures of George Bush, the first presidential GB and Crispin Glover that really... was very much a twin like situation) but other than that, it could possibly be the same magazine.
Note the following column Spy Article from 1996 on Scientology (which unfortunately again is getting alot of press...blargh) and the Religion of the "stars" of the "moment" Kabbalah Chronicles in Radar. I am sure the similarities aren't going to end there. Dear all that is publishing and holy I hope not. Please let this by my snarky life line to slicked paper pop culture. Let it last. At least as long as Spy did...please?
If you promise to last at least longer than Talk Magazine (which was the Weinstein Bros. attempt to dethrone Vanity Fair...unlikely) you will totally get my 15 bucks. But you have to promise me. I will joy fully write the check as long as I know at least 10 times a year, the maddness will appear in my mail box. Its all I ask.
