What have I been doing....

So there has been not really all that much happening... Sorry.
BUT... I have been reading and listening to pods quite a bit.

First things first... I am picking up on the podcast/new radio world.  Mostly because at work, we can listen and stream (some places don't allow this ) so I know what a spoiled brat this may seem like.  I used to listen completely intently on everything... meaning... true crime pods.  Yeah... that didn't work out well for me at all.  I got completely sidetracked almost all of the time because honestly I got too involved with the story being told.

So office pods include these are my top five -
The Splendid Table  - listening to people talking about food and cooking has been really calming and Francis Lam has such an enthusiasm and it's interesting to hear him talk about food from a food book editor side of the world.

The Bowery Boys - ok so this one is a fave.  They cover all things New York history which is so clearly fascinating. They cover historical people, places and yes... even things.  When we were in NY a few months ago we were walking up the Bowery (unironically) and we saw posters from their walking tour.  I took pictures of them and went into the archives and found the stories of the places we had walked by.  So really well researched and the stories are told well... It's worth a listen if this type of history interests you.  I would love to do one about my hometown, since like NY things are a changing.  But research takes time... could be worth it though.

Endless Thread - the story about Plate Mountain was my gateway drug to this show.  Its really great.  I am not much of Redditer... I just don't have the time but the stories that they pick up on and investigate and talk about are ahmahzing.  I definitely sometimes do stop what I am supposed to be doing and go back and re-listen so that I get a clear understanding of what I just heard but it is not background noise for sure.  It's a good one kid... check it.

Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident - I have a thing for Dave Hill.  I just do.  Ever since I saw him on @ Midnight, thought he was British, realized he was from Cleveland, saw him play Led Zeppelin with his Dad on the youtubes (search it... it will delight you ... if it doesn't I don't thing you have a soul) .. so when I found his pod cast I was aboard the train... its a great listen... VERRRRRRRY mellow ... it's just exactly what I need sometimes mid week when I feel like I am in a storm of bonkerville.

Sound Opinions - mostly this is for the music interludes and background music but it's an hour show so once a week it's there for me as a glorious non newsy interlude.

I know that isn't a full week's worth of listening... but bear with me here (hear). There is a full on purpose for this post.

Keep going...

So... here is the meat of this thing.
so
I have a few podcasts that I just can't listen to at the office for a miriad of reasons....

Catch and Kill - Ronan Farrows harrowing podcast about the Weinstein b.s.  Its really so unbelievably good.  But for sure not something I can listen to at work.  It's just so harrowing and just can't at the office.

Finding Fred - I am about 1/2 way through the pod.  I used to work at a PBS station and sometimes / mosttimes we would stop what we were doing and watch the show (this was in the late 90s).  So it holds a place in my heart from when I was a kid and an adult.  And I am a crier.  So each episode has me teary (so teary... I can not understate that) so obviously not ok for work.

So here really is the jist of this post.

I am currently reading Officer Clemmons: A Memoir, by Francois Clemmons (not an affiliate link btw).  It's so very good.  I am just at the point where Francois joins the neighborhood.

Through this story so far, I have learned about racism in the South in the 40s and 50s, a dysfunctional family and the talent of a true artist.  I am really loving this book so much.

Again, I am just getting to meat of what the cover image portrays. It's a really lovely story.  Note though that Dr. Clemmons really does open up his own very personal story.  In a very compelling way for sure.  There are so many struggles along the way and the clear message that I have taken is that nothing is insurmountable as long as you find your person, your friend and a partner.  It's been such an enjoyable read so far.

I will have far better notes when I finish the book... but I can honestly say this is an inspirational story with a fine writer and story teller (even if it is his own... which is infinitely harder than anything in the world, I can only imagine.)

Pre order this book... it really is amazing.  And listen to the podcast about Mr. Rogers it will help you understand so much more as well.
