I got through last nights 3 1/2 hour Grammy Award ceremony tonite in less than an hour and a half. I skipped most of all of the performances to be quite honest with you, blessed reader. I skipped James Blunt (always, the guy gives me the willies), Whatsherface Corrine Bailey Ray (she is adorable though), half of Christina (her teeth are way way too white, I mean whiter than her hair or her suit for goodness sake), most of the Chili Peppers (what the hell were they thinking, that song is not a leader on that record at all why not play the hit that won them the Grammy?), watched Mary J Blidge BELT, LOVED LOVED LOVED Gnarls Barkley (always do and seriously a 30 peice orchestra and gospel choir? BRILfuckinglant) and passed on everything else as far as the performances go I have to be honest. I loved those little virtuosos though, they were amazing. The Police? Meh. Stuart Copeland kicked so much butt, I think its just nice to see him banging those drums again after all this time...I could actually give or take Sting with a grain of salt so skipped almost all that also. Of course they are going on a world tour. Why wouldn't they with the hype. Blech. I won't pay to see them. I did once in like 10th grade or something and that was enough, somewhere buried is a tshirt from the show, its good enough for me.
When I was working at this record store in 1986 or so the Grammy's were huge for our business. I would go into work the next day super excited about the industry because we would be busy selling records and cassettes all day, yes real 100% vinyl records. We were one of the first stores outside of Soundtrack that sold cds because the players were so expensive too. Ah good ole Music Masters. Its a Starbucks now. But we sold cds anyways, but rarely and mostly classical and jazz because pop music hadn't taken hold of the medium just yet. I loved that job alot by the way. The guy that owned the store was an old school jazz hound and I will never forget standing at the counter with him getting this amazing education. It was awesome.
Tonite on the way home from dinner I heard an interview with the Smithereens on NPR about their new record and I didn't immediately even think (like I would have back in that day) wow, I better go to the store tommorow and pick that up. I actually thought... wonder were I am going to download that from. I suppose I better send a check to Pat Dinizo just for thinking about it.
